Capstan spin is a good start. You also need those hubs to move as they should or the deck will usually trip a transport shut off (thinking the cassette has reached its end). That is typically driven from a different source, and will probably rely on rubber belts that have either relaxed into uselessness or dissolved into sticky goop. Expect to replace those.
(The belts from my old Tascam had turned to nasty shit)

So if it's eight directions, does that mean, for example, both "Y" and "B" can be activated simultaneously?

Exactly. The buttons come in handy for AB and XY simultaneous activation.
