When you're playing noise guitar, envelope filters plus high output distortions or fuzzes are invaluable.
Concur. Distortion+, Dynacomp, Big Mufffuzz and an MXR Envelope Filter.
Also, see Sherman Filterbank V2.

Well, now I wish I hadn't because it goes for 600 - 800 dollars, but that's fucking sick. Looks exactly like I'd want in terms of reactive but controllable filter/synth noises. Plus having its own pre-filter gain is a bonus, less need to slam it with something crazy like the DM.
Even if you took a few years and learned all the chords you'd still have a limited number of options. If you ignore the chords your options are infinite and you can master guitar playing in one day. - David Fair

On the earlier subject of filters, has anyone here experimented with standalone filter units on guitar other than the aforementioned Sherman? The Erica Synths Acidbox 3 looks interesting, given that it's supposed to be for Acid and its famously thick, squelchy lows, but I've only seen synth demos and a few wimpy clean guitar examples. So I've really got no idea how it would sound with a fuzzed-up wall of glitching and mutant drone doom. Since they tend to be much more expensive than your average pedal, I'd like to know whether there's any particularly good filter units for playing noise guitar before taking the plunge.
On the much cheaper end of the spectrum, is the EHX Bassballs any good for guitar noise? It seems like it would be sensitive to hot signals similar to the Bass Synth Wah that I love so much.

Wahs, MXR and Mutron.
Stock and modded to sweep to that frequency you feel about 2 inches inside your head. Pre and post gain structuring is key.
