Not as far as I can see. Modernism as a 'style' copies cultural objects from the period of modernism, mid 19th - mid 20th C, that is copies the appearance, but not the substance, like in ideas of 'make it new' 'truth to materials'... pushing the envelope, progress... it doesn't copy those features... it cant, in the latter, 'progress' is reversed , a 21stC 'modernism' is retro. It is 'Make it old - looking' - mid 20th C. Or putting vinyl surface sounds on CDs...Social_Drift wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 8:30 amok so modernism with a very specific ideological definition is now just regurgitated modernism.JLIAT wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 8:23 amNot really because i'm saying modernism as was, was a method / set of ideas/ philosophy which as the wiki quote states had general common features. You cant do that now, only use it as a style.Social_Drift wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 8:02 am i would say that while you raise a valid point about noise not being new anymore, to say "modernism is just a style now" wrongly lumps together maybe even hundreds of modernist art movements
oh well.

Making it your own but within contradictory lines.
Noise is not popular.
Sound design ambient soundtrack sound effects experimental masterpieces by the greatest composers for the greatest films are not popular...not really.
No airplay tiny sales not popular.
So even The Best possible examples of Noise...are just noise to most people.
Right?
Why?
Wait...wait wait.
What is Not noise...

i would oppose that -- imo wrong -- claim to the idea that the avant garde still exists but it no longer generates either the social or artistic excitement it used it.
'modernist' seems more like a critics word -- at least these days. just like 'avant garde' in common use just means fashionable.Oh well...but here we are right.?

But by what measure? It certainly is more "popular" than when I started fucking around with it in the late 80's .. anyway.. I have a hard time seeing it become "popular music" like something that charts on a regular basis or has reality TV show competitions.

You're taking a general swipe at people who make noise on a noise forum many of which are older than you so perhaps you owe us more of an explanation.

Re: What Noise Is Not.
pat, i wasnt referring to you or anyone here -- all five of you! i just mean that i encounter -- too often -- people who think they're pushing the envelope by putting e.g. a good looking woman on their release, as if totally unaware that's been done, and without a sense of humor or ability to even say what they mean. it's still noise, but i feel like it's been dumbified.
