What Noise Is Not.

Re: What Noise Is Not.
Well if I can use the 'style' idea, i'd say people now getting into noise seem more interested in style. I mean we do get the "How does X get that sound..?" "What equipment does Y use..?" Or even "As a newbie how do I make noise..?"... now one could NOT ask these questions 30 or more years ago. Of who?NoiseWiki wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:16 amok thanks.. that's a better explanation of how you feel and I'm sure many would agreeSocial_Drift wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:09 am pat, i wasnt referring to you or anyone here -- all five of you! i just mean that i encounter -- too often -- people who think they're pushing the envelope by putting e.g. a good looking woman on their release, as if totally unaware that's been done, and without a sense of humor or ability to even say what they mean. it's still noise, but i feel like it's been dumbified.
And the said originators of noise, and I guess there are it seems at least 2 or more here can legitimately continue to do so because of their originality. I mean Monet was painting impressionist paintings during WW1, long after it was Avant Garde. For him to do so as an originator seems legitimate, for someone in 1916 to start trying to make modern art using impressionism would be a mistake.

For some, there is no front now, everything is retro, even noise.Social_Drift wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:51 am so what is "at the front"?
anyway, i still like noise.
Look at tech, back to modular, and Behringer copies of 70s synths.

Re: What Noise Is Not.
years before Troniks people tended not to sit around on forums on their asses in fervent debates over what is and isn't noise...
they just created and there wasn't rigid frigid predetermined blueprint/guidelines/rules...
NWW was considered noise... so was power electronics... so was Sek'd... so was melt banana...
personally see current noise scene in total free fall directly into the total boring mundane...
all the fervent noise rules to only include a supposed self appointed elite sect requirements as criteria...
based on such techniques/methods & only what they can create...
is Total Castation
Zeni Geva was even considered being in Noise scene back then....
because it was abrasive dissonant chords...
thus why personally can't give a flying rats ass about what other people consider "Noise" now.
Such is completely limiting/counter productive masturbation and actually has completely fukt the entire "noise scene"
people used to care what category their releases got stuck in record stores...
maybe you want fighting for your MP3 ID3 tag rights or something...
it's all devolved into absurdity... so transgressive... transnoise... bleh... ~yawn~

NoiseWiki wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 9:00 amBut by what measure? It certainly is more "popular" than when I started fucking around with it in the late 80's .. anyway.. I have a hard time seeing it become "popular music" like something that charts on a regular basis or has reality TV show competitions.
So your new job is noise related...naw...
Its more popular sure but its not even close to viable for a business... compared to say what any of us do for work ....it costs money to do with no return.
Its not winning grammys or making any 'real' sales....no noise release is selling millions of copies.
Nobody but a fringe noise music freak would mention xenaksis or Wendy carlos or rrron...noise is unpopular

Re: What Noise Is Not.
I've said already that, while noise may not be popular (it got more mainstream attention in the 90's than it does now, barring that adult swim noise compilation), it's definitely considered passe with the stereotypical millennial, Internet-meme-as-legitimate-social-commentary crowd. "The children are the future", and everything seems to be a joke with them. Nothing surprises most "hip" and "with-it" people anymore. It's hard to deny that they do make up the market share of today's pop-cultural consumption-defecation cycle. For instance, I got invited to a co-workers Superbowl party, and every ad I saw during was just a bunch of 80's/90's references trying to pander to exactly this crowd. Ultimately, depending on your definition of the word "popular", noise could be considered popular* indeed, if only because "NOISE" in its most distilled, meme-cliche sense, is another discarded Internet joke that most "people today" recognize on some level, regardless of their sympathies.
It's very difficult for me to understand who I am supposed to be trying to relate to or communicate with authentically where "noise" or "music" as I render them are concerned either way. That is, beyond taking willing participants along for the ride. Their reasons are their own. I don't really care. If they're into it, fine. If they're just posing or having a laugh, that is fine too. I've said before as well that what I do is ultimately a crude folk/outsider form of expression (in using what limited cognitive assets are available to me) at its highest level, and a kind of pornography at its most base level. It's okay with me not to rationalize it or try to elevate it beyond it's most base level. Because "appreciation of noise" is a very base thing. It tingles in my large head the way the sight of a [censored description of something vulgar here] tingles in my little head. That's always been the meat of it, no pun intended. Because it feels good in my ears and in my head, just like it did when I was little, to hear gravel crunching under the tires on our long, pebble driveway. I think everything else is secondary, and a way of coming to terms with my own limitations. It's not for any of you, but I'll gladly take your cash for it.

"Noise" has not been a "specialist" enterprise since the late 70's at least.
