how can you like a genre of music that is so stupid, disposable, with dubious values, no pay off, and is at its best when you just turn it off?

maybe that's enough.

Whatever floats your boat. It's also possible to appreciate the significance of music / art that has no aesthetic - to like or not - at all.

So does old art cease to be art when it's no longer new ;-)

Well according to some it does,
The xe2x80x9cvaluexe2x80x9d now of an original Cubist painting is not unlike, in most respects, an original manuscript by Lord Byron, or The Spirit of St. Louis as it is seen in the Smithsonian Institution.
Joseph Kosuth Art after Philosophy 1969.

Though I think a) This applies to Modernism, typically reacting to and in cases rejecting what went before... and b) One can still value old art as its dealing with the same problems... needs... the human reaction to 'being' as and in a non rational way. Admire the methods and techniques... one can admire a Gothic cathedral or Bach without being religious.

"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."

"We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar"

Mmm art doesn't have to be valuable or important to be art.

The famous "End of Art" was the very result.... the inability to find a framework.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Da ... end_of_art
The "end of art" refers to the beginning of our modern era of art in which art no longer adheres to the constraints of imitation theory but serves a new purpose. Art began with an "era of imitation, followed by an era of ideology, followed by our post-historical era in which, with qualification, anything goes... In our narrative, at first only mimesis [imitation] was art, then several things were art but each tried to extinguish its competitors, and then, finally, it became apparent that there were no stylistic or philosophical constraints. There is no special way works of art have to be. And that is the present and, I should say, the final moment in the master narrative. It is the end of the story."

Apparently not that famous

One could also call it the end of elitism or the boy's club.

Sure, call it what you want. Maybe also pick football teams and Olympic athletes in a non elitist way, and surgeons...
I mean Luke above has a point? Just as valid as any other?
