Why my pedal went to sleep in the middle of jam ?

Post by JUBOO120MG »

A few months ago I bought a cheap Behringer multi FX just for the sake of testing different type of effect. The thing is, sometime it went to sleep when I play with it too long. Like the LED will beep and the input signal cannot passed through it. I had experience the same problem before with my secondhand Digitech DigiDelay. If you play too much with the knob it will just go beep and went to sleep.. it will remain like that for awhile (which can last from minutes to hours) before it function again. Why ? :assault:

I couldn't find anything about it in the normal guitar-centric group. Has this ever happened to you. What is the reason. Is it because it is 'cheap' ? is it because it is a digital pedal (this stuff never happened to my analog pedals) ? Is it because there's too much pressure being put onto the pedal till the point it decide to shut itself off (I tend to be a bit brutal when making noise) ?

My patches cable and the power input is all OK btw.. As far as I can tell this is clearly the pedal fault..

Anyone here has any lead on why this thing happened. confused

Are you using batteries?

In all seriousness, the early versions of that Behringer multi-fx pedal were somewhat notorious for shitting out. I think they probably fixed this issue, by and large, with later revisions. IIRC, there's two distinct versions: FX-100 and FX-600, both with the same effects and basic design. Known issues were presumably resolved with the "600" revision.

If you are using batteries, that could be the problem. Digital effects tend to tap out their minimum voltage requirements very quickly when run on battery power. It's best to run digital effects on wall power for this reason.

Ixe2x80x99ve also encountered this problem a few times before with some of my digital delay pedals (not just Behringer), though I admit I donxe2x80x99t remember if I was using batteries every time this happened.

This is pure speculation on my part (crochambeau, your table is waiting), but if everything in your pedal chain is running off the same power supply I.e. a 9v wall wart with a daisy chain to power multiple pedals, maybe another pedal in your chain is drawing more current than the others? Itxe2x80x99s doubtful, but then again I have no idea whatxe2x80x99s in your chain or how itxe2x80x99s hooked up.

Yeah, randomly shitting the bed would have me looking at power issues first. Digital pedals can get hungry.

Beyond that it could be some logic latching up and essentially fucking the structure of the circuit, though that should be resettable with the age old "have you turned it off and then on again?" routine - and not a minutes to hours issue. I would speculate that a circuit fragile enough to require the power filtering caps to discharge completely before being able to unlatch and resume operation would never have made it off the design floor, but we need to consider the source..

One test for that would be to unplug the thing from power and short the power rail to ground when it hangs up (this could fuck up user memory slots if applicable). Then if it's ready to go again immediately you have a sort of solution, though if you wire that to a reset button you will want to allocate a normally closed pole to the power inlet so you interrupt power and short the hang-up with one push on the fly.

Mind you, this is all first cup of tea speculation so don't place too much on it, I really have no idea why the pedal is being a recalcitrant asshole (insert tired joke here), and it does not address the cause of the fault, which may be baked in to the design.

Serious about examining power supply though, that would be my first stop.
When in doubt, add resistance.

Yeah I have experienced odd behaviour with certain pedals or too many pedals on a single one spot. Although my recollection of the problem appeared as unwanted noise or the whole chain turning off momentarily.

We wont beable to debug this without some answers about the GOP's setup. But I'll settle with behringer just being shit.

I used to use power supply but recently I started using batteries.
The thing still happened in both occasion still  with the Digitech Delay.
I havent used power supply with Behringer yet tho.

That sound plausible. what about the external pedalboard power supply ? Is it recommended for digital effects.

So I guess the general consensus in this thread is that power supply might be the problem. Will surely check this one out.
I don't have my power supply with me right now, need to wait for the whole Corona things mellow down a bit first before I finally can get back to my place.

Will update whether this actually work in the future.

Not sure whether it will help or not but as had been requested here is my current setup.
It is pretty simple setup as I didn't bring that many stuff with me when the quarantine start.

With the Digitech Digidelay the problem usually occurred when I keep playing with the knob too much. It go beeb and went to sleep.
With this current setup the behringer just went to sleep whenever it wanted.

PS: Setup 2 is bass only btw.

Well it appears that you are running the pedals off batteries which is kind of wasteful. Do you have a one spot power adapter.. try at least plugging the behringer into the wall at the very least
